Havelock News
  • Havelock downs Jacksonville

  • The Havelock Rams dispatched Jacksonville 42-12 for homecoming on Friday at Havelock High School.
  • The Havelock Rams have been on a mission all year, but the next three weeks have an added fervor as they face off against bitter rivals — which began with Jacksonville Friday.
The Rams cruised to a resounding 42-12 victory over the Cardinals at Havelock High.
The Rams charged to an early 14-0 lead, but penalties and dropped passes allowed the visitors to stay close until midway through the second quarter when the Rams flipped the switch.
While Derrell Scott rushed for 121 yards on 14 carries, and scored a pair of touchdowns, and recent Shrine Bowl invite recipient Pharoh Cooper threw for 123 yards, and rushed for 68 and two scores, it was the other Rams’ Shrine Bowler who perhaps came up largest.
A.J. Coplon had a pair of interceptions, the latter of which he returned 98 yards for a score, after returning his first to the 6-yard line.
Coplon appeared to injure himself in the first half, but left Jacksonville defenders in the dust on his pick-6 return in the third quarter.
“I hurt my shin a little bit in the first half, but on that pick, I just read the fade route and got it and I knew I wasn’t getting caught,” Coplon said.
“This win was big and it feels good. We played it like we play every other game and we still have things to do.”
About the only wormhole in the Rams’ apple Friday was committing 10 penalties for 89 yards. Other than that, Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant was happy as usual after a win.
“I thought we played really well,” Bryant said. “We had some breakdowns with fundamentals and penalties, and things like that, but with these guys, I don’t stress over those too much because I know they will make plays and their penalties are aggressive. You would rather have to worry about calming your players down than firing them up.”
No one needed to fire up the Rams, as they wanted to prove a point to the Cardinals’ defense.
Havelock rushed for 249 yards on 47 carries, and its own rock-solid defense held Jacksonville to 15 yards on 17 carries.
Malcom Ashley, Anthony Fisher and Kendal Vickers were terrors on defense for the Rams.
Havelock (8-1, 5-0 Coastal 3A) hosts West Carteret on Friday, while Jacksonville (6-3, 3-2) takes on D.H. Conley.
