  • An investigation into a murder case continued Monday in Carteret County with a focus on the cause of death of the victim, whose body was found last week in a wooded area of Newport.
An autopsy was performed Monday on Goldie Hall, 90, at the medical examinerís office in Greenville. According to the office, results showed the cause of death as blunt force injuries to the head.
Hallís body was located Thursday afternoon, hours after her great-niece, Rhonda Williams Hagan, 30, of Newport, made a first appearance in Carteret County District Court on an open count of murder.
Hagan remained in custody Monday in the Carteret County Jail without bond and is scheduled for a court appearance on Oct. 12.
She also has a Nov. 5 court date scheduled on a pending misdemeanor stalking charge, which authorities say is unrelated to the Hall case.
The murder charge stems from an investigation that began into Hallís disappearance after a Sept. 20 fire at her home at 2065 Highway 24 in the Gales Creek community.
The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the house, but Hall was not inside and could not be located after extensive land and air searches of her property and the surrounding area.
Hagan is accused of killing her great-aunt on the day of the fire.
A recording of the 911 call reporting the fire was released last week, and Hagan was the one who called in the fire at her great-auntís house. Hagan was arrested Wednesday on the murder charge.
Carteret County deputies and State Bureau of Investigation agents found Hallís body the next day on the property of Garner Farms, located at the north end of Carl Garner Road in Newport.
Hallís body was wrapped in a blanket and found in a wooded area about 300 yards northeast of the main gate. Additional evidence related to the crime scene was also collected from the area.
