  • A Newport woman has been charged with murder in her missing great aunt's death.

    A Newport woman has been charged with murder in her missing great aunt's death.
    Rhonda Williams Hagan, 30, of Nine Foot Road, was charged late Wednesday with an open count of murder by the Carteret County Sheriff's Office and SBI agents.
    Hagan is accused of murdering her great aunt Goldie Hall, 90, of N.C. 24 in Newport on Sept. 20, the same day the residence went up in flames, according to the CCSO.
    Hall's body has not been recovered at this time and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
    Lt. Michael Panzarella, lead detective on the case, stated that due to the ongoing criminal investigation no further details about the crime can be released.
    Hagan is being held in the Carteret County Jail without bond. Her first court appearance on Thursday morning.
    Sheriff Asa Buck thanked all the members of the investigative team to include his staff of deputies and detectives in addition to members of the NCSBI, and ATF who all
    played a vital role in the investigation. In addition, District Attorney Scott Thomas spent the day Wednesday with investigators as the case unfolded.
    Sheriff Buck also wished to thank all the law enforcement officers from the Morehead Pine Knoll Shores Police, Cape Carteret Police, Beaufort Police, and the NCSHP for participating in the informational roadblock that was conducted Wednesday in front of Hallís residence.
