An Amber Alert has been issued in North Carolina and South Carolina in the case of a missing Carteret County girl.

Abigale Lefevers, 12, from Newport, is believed to be in the company of Timothy Newman, 38, a registered sex offender.



According to the alert, Newman may be in a red Chrysler Sebring with the North Carolina license tag AKT6534. The vehicle was last seen about 1:42 a.m. Monday on U.S. 17 southbound near the South Carolina border.



Lefevers was last seen by her father at their Newport area home on Sunday at about 10 p.m. but when he awoke Monday at about 6:25 a.m. he noticed that she was missing, authorities said.



Newman was last seen at 10 p.m. Sunday by his roommate. He was gone from the residence Monday morning and did not show up for work, according to a release by the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office.



The sheriff’s office said an investigation has revealed that Newman has had contact with Abigale in the past several weeks.



Newman also lives in the Newport area. He is described as white, 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighing about 247 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.



Abigail is white and has a pink book bag with a peace sign on it.
