  • The Havelock Rams haven’t lost a Coastal 3A Conference game in nearly 23 months. The Rams look to keep the streak going against White Oak at 7 p.m. today in Jacksonville.
“We are excited about it,” Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. “We break down our season into three seasons – non-conference, conference and playoffs. I told our kids that everybody starts 0-0. The only thing we are looking at is White Oak.
The Rams last lost a conference game on Oct. 29, 2010 to West Carteret 34-30. Since then, Havelock has won eight straight league tilts and 23 of its last 25 games overall.
The Rams (3-1), ranked third in the Associated Press state 3A poll, have rolled through two non-conference opponents since losing 34-33 to New Bern on Aug. 24. Havelock has scored 120 points, including last week’s 65-18 victory over Kinston.
Havelock is averaging 50.3 points per game and is giving up 18 points per game.
Last week against Kinston, Quarterback Pharoh Cooper was 15 of 16 for 348 yards, ranking second in school history in single-game passing yards. He has thrown for 954 yards and seven touchdowns and has also added 293 yards and five scores on the ground.
The South Carolina commit needs just 46 yards passing against the Vikings to become the quickest quarterback in school history to reach 1,000 yards.
“I think Pharoh has done a great job stepping into the quarterback role,” Bryant said of Cooper, a record-setting receiver on last season’s state championship team. “It took him a couple weeks to get the reads down, but when you have weapons like Michael Bowman and Taylor Woods and Derrell Scott and C.J. Lindsey and a seasoned offensive line, it helps a lot.
Bowman, a sophomore, has 21 catches for 346 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Rams, while new receiver Aron Rossi has 210 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Scott, a two-way starter whose touches offensively have been somewhat limited in the early going by Bryant, has 419 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He had 139 yards and three scores last week against Kinston.
Meanwhile, A.J. Coplon is contributing everywhere on the field. He has just four catches but they total 203 yards, for a 50.7-yard average per catch. He also has two punt returns for touchdowns this season and a pair of interceptions on defense.
White Oak is off to an 0-4 start to the season under new coach Chad Ashley. Steven Moses ran for 74 yards to lead the Vikings in last week’s 41-0 loss to Southwest Onslow.
White Oak has scored just 14 points this season and is surrendering 30.8 per game.
The contest marks the 37th meeting between the two schools, with the Rams owning a 36-10 lead in the series.
